THE LIGHT BETWEEN WORLDS

The Light Between Worlds is Eden's debut recording and was originally released on vinyl by Scottish label Nightshift Records in early 1990. The release caught the attention of BBC Radio's John Peel who featured tracks on his show, resulting in rapid support of Eden by the American magazine Alternative Press.

Eden had formed in 1988 when Pieter Bourke was introduced to Sean Bowley at an alternative Melbourne nightspot. Bowley had previously been singer and guitarist for local band All Things Unseen. The two musicians quickly bonded over a shared appreciation for many of the alternative UK bands of the day. ‘I remember Pieter hanging out at my pad behind a shop in Brunswick St, Fitzroy later that night’, Bowley recalls. ‘We talked about our mutual love of music into the early hours of the morning. Before long we began to write music together with Ross Healy on Bass.’

Bourke had met Healy towards the end of high school. By the time Bowley joined them they'd already been working together for a number of years on instrumental tracks but had not yet performed publicly or made studio recordings. ‘There was some common ground in terms of the music Ross and I had been listening to’, recalls Bourke, ‘but I think it was around the area of music technology that we really connected. Ross was a drummer, but he was also interested in electronic instruments. He already had a Sequential Circuits Drumtraks drum machine and a Casio FZ-1 sampler. These were not cheap instruments. In combination with my analog synths we could generate quite a good instrumental sound together.’ Mark Braby was later brought in as guitarist and singer.

This lineup was expanded with the addition of Sean Bowley on guitars, vocals and lyrics, however Braby left the group shortly after. The new trio began to write and rehearse on a regular basis and chose the band name Eden. At the time Bourke was working as a graphic designer, with a particular interest in calligraphy and typography. He started developing the band's visual identity by designing the calligraphic Eden logo as well as bespoke promotional poster designs for each live gig.

The earliest original Eden compositions were Disenchanted Dream and Rainwashed. They were soon followed by Searching for Angels Hands, Dusk and St Genevieve’s Dance. By June 1988 Eden had recorded demos of ten songs on a 4 track cassette recorder. The band's first public performance was on 16 July 1988 at St Bede's Old Collegians Hockey Club. Soon after they played their first pub gig at the Baden Powell Hotel in Prahran. Eden worked hard to establish themselves as a live act, quickly attracting an art school audience and eventually gained enough notoriety to score frequent support spots at the Punter’s Club, Prince of Wales, Evelyn Hotel, Old Greek Theatre and other venues around Melbourne. Musically the band had nothing in common with the other bands they performed with. Bowley remembers that, ‘we must have been very noticeably different. In a very cheeky way we felt like rebels pushing against a mostly boring and fairly conventional music scene. We were very caught up in making our own thing happen.’

In December 1988 Eden received their first radio airplay, appearing for an interview with host Lawrence Hudson on his program New, Used and Abused on Melbourne independant broadcaster 3RRR. Two of the demo recordings were played on air, Saint Genevieve's Dance and Searching For Angels Hands.

Pre-production for the bands first studio recordings commenced with Australian musician and producer Chris Harold (The Ferrets, The Chemicals). The first recording sessions took place at Sing Sing Studios in Richmond. The band worked on three songs, none of which were completed except for the tracking of the instrumental Dark Beneath Trees. Overall the members of Eden came away dissatisfied with the recordings and disheartened by the experience, feeling that Melbourne at that time did not have the engineers or producers who understood how to capture or enhance the ethereal music they were making.

Several months later in September 1989 a second recording session began at Hothouse Audio in St Kilda, this time with Producer Simon Polinski and engineer Angus Davidson. The original recordings of Searching For Angels Hands and Dark Beneath Trees were completed and remixed, and three new songs were recorded and mixed. Eden approached several labels with their recordings and were eventually signed to Nightshift Records located in Grangemouth Scotland, enabling them to achieve their major objective of securing a release in the UK.
