33rd Degree Music Studio
33rd Degree Music Studio was established by Pieter Bourke in 2002. Situated in Melbourne's south-east, the space was designed and equipped with a focus on electronic music production and mixing.
Developments in affordable hardware and software have enabled musicians to write and record at home or on the go without the expense of using a recording studio. But there are many advantages to finishing your recordings in a professional workspace on accurate monitors with an experienced engineer and producer.
The critical last stage of music production often involves more than just mixing. Perhaps some sounds need to be refined or replaced, or maybe your drums aren't hitting in the way you'd like and need some reprogramming? Does the arrangement need tightening up or stripping back? Even if your material is mix ready, gaining a new perspective from fresh ears at the end of a project can make a world of difference to the final result. Pieter understands this process and will strive to achieve the musical results you're aiming for.
If you're in the middle of writing your music there are several ways your production could benefit from a session at 33rd Degree Music Studio. You can then take the results back to your personal workspace for integration into your developing production.
Explore and play our synthesizer collection first hand to record parts for your production or to replace soft-synth sounds with some real analog hardware.
Process any of your existing sounds, elements or stems through high end analog processors, filters and effects for enhancement or complete sonic reimagining.
Create rhythm and drum parts with hardware drum machines, samplers and dynamics processors.
Record and/or process vocal tracks.
Remote recording of vocals and instruments in the comfort of your own creative space via Steinberg VST Connect Pro.
Pieter believes there’s a genuine need for an affordable studio service catered to electronic music producers. The facilties needed differ from that of acoustic based works which require acoustic recording spaces, drum rooms, guitar amps and a large microphone collection. Electronic music productions benefit from an open acoustically treated main studio room with accurate monitors. Access to a selection of great hardware synths, effects and analog processors can elevate your music productions to a higher level. It also helps to work with an engineer who understands your specific requirements and who has spent decades working with electronic instruments.
Whether you require production assistance during your project or have material ready for final mixing, Bourke brings his songwriting, programming and production experience to every project. He knows that successful collaboration requires the right blend of musical, technical and communication skills along with the ability to keep the artist’s vision in focus throughout the process. Clients have the option of attending sessions in person or sending their files to be worked on.
If you have a project you would like to discuss please get in touch via the contact page. More studio pictures can be seen on the gallery page.
Electronic Instruments
A fine collection of vintage and modern electronic hardware is available for all sessions at 33rd Degree Studio. Explore modern classics such as the Matrixbrute, PolyEvolver, Moog Sub 37, Nord Lead 3 and Elektron Analog Rytm Mk II drum machine. Or choose from vintage Roland, ARP and Korg mono synths, 90’s PCM workstations, Akai samplers, and MPC4000 sampler/sequencer. Nothing rivals the immediacy and tactile response of hardware instruments for ‘hands on’ sound creation and performance.
Audio Processors
Sound processing is an essential part of music production for both creative and corrective purposes. 33rd Degree Studio is an analog / digital hybrid offering a wealth of processing options, from subtle to extreme, brutal to beautiful. Outboard processors include units from Kush Audio, Rupert Neve Designs, Avalon, Millennia Music Systems, Universal Audio, SPL and Buzz Audio. Effects include Roland Space Echo, Moog Pedals, Sherman Filterbank, Eventide FX, Lexicon and TC Electronic Reverbs.
Hybrid Mixing
Hearing your recordings accurately in full frequency with clarity, depth and punch is a revelatory experience. Mixing decisions become easier and the end results translate more consistently across a variety of playback systems. 33rd Degree Studio is equipped with Focal SM9 3-way mid field reference monitors. Final mixes run through a Rupert Neve Designs 5059 Summing Mixer, then a suite of Class-A analog mix buss EQ and Compression and Lynx converters to produce sonically rich and detailed pre-master mixes.
