On their self titled debut release SOMA firmly established themselves as purveyors of a futuristic sound. After establishing a writing partnership within the band Snog, Pieter Bourke and David Thrussell formed a new project with the intention of exploring instrumental music of a more cinematic nature. Drawing upon their repsective musical tastes the two musicians found that Thrussell’s techno and industrial noise leanings combined perfectly with Bourke’s electronic, world and orchestral sounds and rhtyhms. The result was the self titled SOMA 7 track release.

‘What if Kraftwerk had begun not in 1970, but today, with all our current technology? What would they sound like? I think the answer to that last poser is Soma. Like Kraftwerk before them, Soma relentlessly experiment with sound, but like the best of Kraftwerk it is instantly accessible. Soma meld chaos from styles as diverse as the syncopation of reggae to the dark melodies of early Magazine, staking their claim firmly in the no-mans-land where labels defy existence. Not trance, not ambient, not really techno – Soma are the electronic music of the future.’ Dave Thompson
