SOMA
STYGIAN VISTAS

1997

Stygian Vistas cover.jpg

The Stygian Vistas 8 track ep by SOMA serves as an accomplished follow up to The Inner Cinema, with the sounds varying from disjointed spaghetti western licks on the title track to the spacey dub of Alchemical Nuptial and the throbbing Lost Mathematicians. Unique Eastern, Western and outer space influences cross fertilized in a widescreen imaginative listening experience. This 8 track release includes remixes by Bernd Friedmann (Nonplace Urban Field) and François Tétaz.

‘Stygian Vistas revises and remixes the most interesting tracks from the preceding two albums. With Stygian Vistas SOMA remains a consequent exception of a project, full of ideas whoch manages to draw back from each simple musical genre.’ Radio ffn Grenzwellen

‘What a remix album. Sounds which seem to come from another planet. Science fiction music. It has something to do with rock, a bit with rave, a little bit with techno. Here and there you could spot pop elements and dub sequences can be heard but in spite of this it sounds like something completely new.’ Linie 4

‘They have an astonishing feeling for the right sounds and for great melodies and with this Soma create all their instrumental songs in an intelligent and interesting way. A great album!’ New Life

‘David Thrussell and Pieter Bourke are unreservedly admired in Melbourne’s underground electronic scene. For this mini album, Soma’s third major release, mythology becomes the right of passage to exciting new musical panoramas. Unlike many nebulous strains of experimental ambience, Soma’s works are tightly controlled, yet never contrived. You will also be taken up by the high quality of the engineering. Australian electronic music is coming of age!’ Zebra
